Immediately after Gene 's first hit composition , Pitney emerged as an American rock and roll recording star. Liberty Valence , Only Love Can Break A Heart , Mecca , and Backstge were a few of Gene Pitney 's major hit songs in the U.S. In late 1963, Gene crossed over "the pond" (Atlantic Ocean) to start his international success in Britain. Three major UK hits are shown in the bottom left corner of the collage: Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa , I'm Gonna Be Strong , and Somethings Gotten Hold Of My Heart were tremendous successes for Pitney .
